Spiritual Gifts Message

I gave this message to kids aged 5-10 years at our discipleship group we run fortnightly. Feel free to use/ adapt for your own kids ministry!

Today, I walked into my office and a bag was sitting on my desk… I looked inside it and there was a card that said ‘to (your kid's ministry name)’..

So I thought we should open it together. Inside there are 3 gifts, are there 3 children here who want to open one gift up?

(choose 3 children to open up the gifts for your kids ministry- I had a ball, a pack of cards and a game of jenga)

How perfect, someone has given us toys and games to play with! I think we can use next week for hang time!

You know what, these gifts work perfectly with what I want to share with you today.

I was reading the bible earlier and I came across this verse:
1 Corinthians 12: 7
A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other

It says that we all have a spiritual gift.
What is a spiritual gift? –we've been talking about them all term (Word of knowledge, Word of wisdom, Discernment of spirits, Gifts of healing, Miracles, Faith, Prophecy, Tongues, Interpretation of tongues)

These are gifts that we can only do if we have the Holy Spirit helping us, doing them with us.

God has also given us other gifts, things like talents that we are good at. My gift might not be the same as yours. I think that one of my gifts is that I’m good at speaking to kids, and sharing what the bible teaches us.

But here’s the thing… God has given us these gifts, so we have them… But we need to use them. The bible verse I read out says that ‘so we can help each other’. Which means that we need to use our gifts!
These gifts that someone special gave us, are cool. But if we just left them in a cupboard, is that smart? Like, should we say ‘thanks’ and then just leave them there?

No, we should use them.

Here’s another thing. If I were to go ‘oh cool, a ball’ and then took it over here and played with it by myself, I might have a little bit of fun, and it might be good for a while, but eventually I’m going to realize that I need to use it with other people in order for it to be good and effective. (try playing 'catch' by yourself)

“A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other”

1.     We need to use the gifts god gave us
2.     We need to use them to help each other

But what is our gift? How do you know what your gift is?

You need to pray about it. You need to ask God what he has given to you. You can ask people who know you best. Sometimes we don’t know what our gift is because we just think it’s normal, and then when someone says ‘hey, you are really good at making people happy when they are sad’, that you realise what one of your gifts are.

And just like this mystery person gave us 3 gifts, sometimes God can give us a few gifts.

Put your hand up if you think you know what one of your gifts is from God.
Put up your hand if you think that maybe God wants to tell you what another one of your gifts are.

I want to pray for you now so that God tells you what your gift is, and then in our small groups we are going to talk about what God revealed to you during this prayer.

Small group questions:
1.     Go around in the circle and share what everyone’s gift is. For each person, the leader will write down everything the group says about that person.

2.     Pray to finish off that God continues to reveal each person’s gift to them during the time until we meet next.

This Is Me

The Greatest Showman is one of the best movies ever written.  I just saw it (weeks after everyone else, I know) and I was blown away by how great it truly was.  If you've been living under a rock, you might not know that this musical is all about the underdog proving to the world that they matter. Which is kind of what I'm all about- telling people that they matter.  The movie follows P.T. Barnum, a man who creates a show featuring 'odd' individuals- most notably a bearded lady, Lettie.  One particular scene had me in tears. It's a song called ' This is Me ' beautifully sung by the gorgeous Keala Settle (who plays the bearded lady). There are so many reasons I love this song- at the base level it's all about accepting who you are, but underneath all of that, I find it to be quite biblical.  The world says: no one will love you. God says: I love you.  This is Me lyrics:  I've learned to be ashamed of all my scars "Run away", the...

Just 'be'

It's the first week back of term, and my first week back of normal working hours. Last week our church had a huge outreach event, where all week long I was at work setting up for this (I even had a work experience student with me!).  I work 2 days a week-  usually one day is dedicated to planning our Sunday kids programs during the church service, and one day to planning our Friday Kids Club (with other things interspersed through these two days- e.g. meeting with children, running small discipleship groups, staff meetings, leaders meetings, etc).  By some miracle, this week I have run out of things to do.  I find myself sitting at my desk wondering what I could possibly do with the next 2 hours before I am meeting with a child.  My first thought is 'I should find something to do, maybe a boring admin job to fill my time'. However this is not what God wanted! He showed me that most of the time I focus on what I can 'do' instead of who I can 'be'. How a...

How I spend my day off

It’s a Saturday. My day off. You’d think I was sleeping in, having brunch and going for a nice relaxing walk down the beach. But no, I’m not doing any of that (although I would have got a sleep in if I didn’t forget to close my window overnight... the cockatoos woke me up early in the morning!) I’m not doing typical day off things - I’m busy looking for scratch art paper because we need some for an activity for kids church tomorrow (the black represents darkness / sin and when Jesus died on the cross, he took away our sin. He revealed who God created us to be - whole and without blame).   I’ve seen scratch art paper many a time in my various shopping travels. Can I find it now? 2 stores and it’s nowhere to be seen. Sold out.  So I’m now off to a third store to see if I can get some.   Why am I writing to tell you this?  Great question.  Partly, to vent about my frustrations of my past procrastination because now I’m having to do this on a Saturday... Partly...
