True Love- a Disney Lead up to Easter

At my church for the 3 weeks leading up to Easter we are watching Disney movies and looking at different acts of true love. Each week we relate it to what Jesus did for us on the cross. At Easter we will go into a more in-depth view of the Easter story. It's something different, but the kids are loving it so far. Relating Disney movies to Jesus is working well!

Our memory verse for these 3 weeks was 1 John 3:16, and we came up with actions for the words to help kids remember the verse.

I've written here a general script for the 3 movies we are focusing on (Frozen, Aladdin & Inside Out). We found the relevant scene clips on youtube that we showed to the children.

FROZEN- WEEK 1 (Scene where Olaf says 'Some people are worth melting for')

Over the next few weeks, we’re going to be watching bits and pieces of Disney movies to see what true love is, and at Easter time we’re going to talk about the best act of true love ever!

Don’t worry, we’re not going to talk about true love’s kiss... much

This week we are going to be talking about a movie that some people love, and some people really don’t love… Frozen!!!

Frozen is a great movie, and I want to show you one scene from this movie. It’s after Anna has been hit with ice from Elsa and she is back in the castle. She’s really cold and Olaf is trying to warm her up.

See if you can spot what the act of true love is.

(clip)

Awwwww ‘some people are worth melting for’

Olaf knew that Anna needed to be warmed up, and he didn’t care that he would melt when he started the fire.

This is such a cool thing to show us what it means to truly love someone else, that you would do anything for them, even if it means that you don’t get what you want.

Can you think of something that you could do to help someone else?

I have a challenge for you. This week I would like you to do something for someone else. I would like you to show someone that you love them. Are you up for the challenge?

Next week I want to hear what you have done. I want to hear what you did to help someone else, and show them that you love them. It could be a friend, it could be a teacher/ parent/ brother/ sister/ aunty/ uncle/ cousin/ grandparent/ neighbor… the opportunities are endless!

~pray~

ALADDIN- WEEK 2 (Scene where Aladdin frees Genie)

Last week we talked about True Love and you watched Frozen, the bit where Olaf said ‘some people are worth melting for’.

Ask children what they learnt from last week (with acts of true love, sometimes you have to sacrifice something)

This week we are going to be watching a clip from the movie Aladdin. Aladdin is about Aladdin, who falls in love with Princess Jasmine. There’s a rule that only a prince can marry a princess. Aladdin has a Genie that has given him 3 wishes, and he has one left. Let’s see what he does with it…

(clip)

Aladdin uses his last wish to free the Genie instead of making himself a prince.

Aladdin gave up something that meant a lot to him in order to help a friend out. He knew what he was doing, but he cared more about his friend, than getting to marry the girl he loved.

Now, as it turns out, Jasmine’s dad changed the rules so that Aladdin could marry the princess, and they all lived happily ever after.

What can we learn from this movie? (sometimes our friends needs are more important than our own)

This story reminds me of when Jesus cared more about us than he cared for himself. He knew he was going to die painfully on the cross, and still did it anyway because he loves us a lot.

1 John 3:16- This is how we know what Love is, Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.

We can see acts of true love in movies, like Frozen, and Aladdin… but we know what True Love is because of what Jesus did for us.

INSIDE OUT- WEEK 3 (scene where Bing Bong dies)

Over the past 2 weeks we’ve been watching Disney movies and have seen how those characters have shown acts of true love. This week is the last week we’ll be doing this.

Who has seen Inside Out?

This week we are going to watch a clip of Inside Out. For those of you who don’t know, Inside Out is all about 5 emotions that live inside of a girls (Riley) head. Riley also has an imaginary friend called Bing Bong. In the movie Joy and Sadness get lost in Riley’s memory and have to find their way back to the control centre. The bit we’re going to watch is when Riley and Bing Bong fall into the old memories, where memories go to get forgotten. This is bad because if Riley forgets Joy, then she’ll never be happy again.

(clip)

It’s a very sad scene, I cry every time I watches this clip!

Bing Bong loved Joy so much that he did whatever it took to make sure she could make her way back to the control centre. He knew that the two of them couldn’t fit in the flying wagon, so he jumped out, and sacrificed his life so that she could live.

This part of the movie is a perfect example of what Jesus did for us. Jesus wanted us to be free, so that we wouldn’t have to die because of the sin/ bad choices that we made. So he sacrificed himself so that we wouldn’t have to.

That’s why I cry every time I watch this movie, because I remember what Jesus did for me when I see Bing Bong jump out.

This Is Me

The Greatest Showman is one of the best movies ever written.  I just saw it (weeks after everyone else, I know) and I was blown away by how great it truly was.  If you've been living under a rock, you might not know that this musical is all about the underdog proving to the world that they matter. Which is kind of what I'm all about- telling people that they matter.  The movie follows P.T. Barnum, a man who creates a show featuring 'odd' individuals- most notably a bearded lady, Lettie.  One particular scene had me in tears. It's a song called ' This is Me ' beautifully sung by the gorgeous Keala Settle (who plays the bearded lady). There are so many reasons I love this song- at the base level it's all about accepting who you are, but underneath all of that, I find it to be quite biblical.  The world says: no one will love you. God says: I love you.  This is Me lyrics:  I've learned to be ashamed of all my scars "Run away", the...

Just 'be'

It's the first week back of term, and my first week back of normal working hours. Last week our church had a huge outreach event, where all week long I was at work setting up for this (I even had a work experience student with me!).  I work 2 days a week-  usually one day is dedicated to planning our Sunday kids programs during the church service, and one day to planning our Friday Kids Club (with other things interspersed through these two days- e.g. meeting with children, running small discipleship groups, staff meetings, leaders meetings, etc).  By some miracle, this week I have run out of things to do.  I find myself sitting at my desk wondering what I could possibly do with the next 2 hours before I am meeting with a child.  My first thought is 'I should find something to do, maybe a boring admin job to fill my time'. However this is not what God wanted! He showed me that most of the time I focus on what I can 'do' instead of who I can 'be'. How a...

How I spend my day off

It’s a Saturday. My day off. You’d think I was sleeping in, having brunch and going for a nice relaxing walk down the beach. But no, I’m not doing any of that (although I would have got a sleep in if I didn’t forget to close my window overnight... the cockatoos woke me up early in the morning!) I’m not doing typical day off things - I’m busy looking for scratch art paper because we need some for an activity for kids church tomorrow (the black represents darkness / sin and when Jesus died on the cross, he took away our sin. He revealed who God created us to be - whole and without blame).   I’ve seen scratch art paper many a time in my various shopping travels. Can I find it now? 2 stores and it’s nowhere to be seen. Sold out.  So I’m now off to a third store to see if I can get some.   Why am I writing to tell you this?  Great question.  Partly, to vent about my frustrations of my past procrastination because now I’m having to do this on a Saturday... Partly...
